If one email client works with your ISP, there is no reason Kmail should not.

My first impulse when I encounter something like this is to double-check the "send" settings, especially the security settings (SSL, TLS, password auth/auto/plaintext, etc.). I would suggest cycling through them, one at a time, to see if that gives a hint of the culprit.
