I have an SMC Barricade broadband router and want to get the IP Address of the WAN side:
I tried the following:

traceroute -n -m 2 123.123.123.123
traceroute to 123.123.123.123 (123.123.123.123), 2 hops max, 40 byte packets
1 192.168.2.1 2.931 ms 1.046 ms 1.027 ms
2 213.209.64.1 12.742 ms 13.119 ms 11.614 ms

The second address is the Gateway assigned but not the IP address of the WAN. Has anyone got any tips or tricks??
I got this idea from gnudip DDNS client software, but it doesn't give me the IP just the Gateway

Isn't the IP address of internet side of your router the 213.209.64.1? Also isn't there a web interface to the router? I haven't used a SMC router, but I know that Linksys has one.

Yes there is a web interface, yes it supports DDNS (but only to TZO.com), No the Gateway address is not the IP Address.

I want to automate a script (currently runs from cron) to get check if the IP Address is changed, if so it re-writes some of my web pages and up loads them to my web site, this enables me to access my server at home via ssh applet on my web server.

You could get the MAC address and use that to figure our the IP address.

I know the MAC Address but how to get the IP using the MAC Address??
