I just set up [smbind] and [named] on a Windows station so, this won't be a perfect match, but the basics are here.
First of all, named -- is the port blocked? Is the daemon running? Have you checked the logs? Basically, why can't it be seen? If it's not running because the config files are wrong, find a tutorial for how to set it up. They're
everywhere. Looking at this carefully...did the config script start the daemon? I can't say for sure.
Second, you can't connect to the database. Ok...same questions as before, plus, have you read the installation instructions? They tell you how to set up smbind's config file(s). Regardless, like "named", you're going to have to do some of the stuff yourself, like
add a mysql user and
give it permissions to the correct database.
I'm assuming you're running the latest version of smbind (0.4.7). One thing to note (at least on my machine) was that the very last "insert" test fails - you need to edit the configuration test php file to include values for the columns that: have no default value but cannot be null.
Finally, once you start getting database responses you may still have a problem with PEAR or Smarty later in the process, so check the php include_path.
In any case, none of my Linux installations are Fedora--I run a couple of Gentoo's, CentOS, and Embeddix--so all I can really do is ask you the questions I'd be looking into myself. Your configuration will be somewhat alien to me so, that said, good luck.
