small problems with kernel

Im truing to make a nice lean kernel from rh9. after 2 failures i finally made it through with no errors... until boot.
and I quote "kernel panic: no init found, try passing init = option to kernel"

and then

"ext2 filesystem warning ext2_read_super... mounting ext3 filesystem as ext2"

sounds as though these are two different errors. Could someone help point me towards where I went wrong.

I have compiled a freebsd kernel in the past but linux seems as though you are necessarily confronted with more options.

thanks alot

The missing init says to me that there is a typo in your bootloader script (possibly). That is what is was when I got this error.

And did you compile in ext3 support? Are you sure?

I will go back and check for ext3 support but my boot loader will still boot to the old kernel. I use lilo:

boot="/dev/hda"
map=/boot/map
prompt
timeout="150"
message=/boot/message
linear
default=linux

other=/dev/hdb1
label=bsd
table=/dev/hdb

image="/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-13.9"
label=linux
root="/dev/lvgroup/LogVol02"
read-only
initrd="/boot/initrd-2.4.20-13.9.img"

image="/boot/bzImage.LINUX-LITE-5.6.03"
label=LINUX-LITE
root=/dev/hda1
read-only
initrd="/boot/initrd-2.4.20LINUX-LITE-13.9.img"

Could LVM be partof the problem???

here is my lilo.conf. As i am only adding a new kernel and not a new operating system i would think that my "root="

boot="/dev/hda"
map=/boot/map
prompt
timeout="150"
message=/boot/message
linear
default=linux

other=/dev/hdb1
label=bsd
table=/dev/hdb

image="/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-13.9"
label=linux
root="/dev/lvgroup/LogVol02"
read-only
initrd="/boot/initrd-2.4.20-13.9.img"

image="/boot/bzImage.LINUX-LITE"
label=LINUX-LITE
root="/dev/lvgroup/LogVol02"
read-only
initrd="/boot/initrd-2.4.20-18.9.LINUX-LITE.img"
would be the same.
