Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Just did a full install of Slackware8. Part of that install is Apache1. I just downloaded the source for Apache2 and try to get that working, but it wont. After doing ./configure then make and make install I tried to start the service by typing in /usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start but it doesnt do anything. I check whats running by using nmap, and all that I show is SSH (I shut everything else off). So I tried again, I typed /usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start and it acts like its working, yet does nothing. The process never actually starts. When I type /usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl stop just to see what it says, it says its not running. It returns NO error messages when I type /usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start.
I figured it might not be working due to something with Apache1 aleady being installed, so I basically removed every single file I could that had anything to do with Apache1. Then I did a configure, make, make install again with Apache2 and tried to start it... same results... nothing happens.
