Slackware 9.1 non-AA fonts

When I disable AA fonts in Slackware 9.1, the fonts become very, well, ugly (heavily pixelated, not as good as the non-AA fonts in 9.0). I read that it may have something about freetype being compiled without BYTECODE_INTEPRETER in 9.1. I tried rebuilding it with that option, as well as installing the older package from linuxpackages.net.

Any ideas to make these fonts look better? Or how to build my own version of freetype? I did a configure/make/make install, but I guess that's not enough..

Take a look here: http://www.geocities.com/pesho_pv/By...o-hinter.html, tell me which option do you like most (i.e. what do you mean with "Any ideas to make these fonts look better?") and I'll try to help. :) One screenshot of your desktop wouldn't hurt either. ;)
