Slackware 8.0 install guide

I've just got Slackware 8.0 off ebay (it's not an advertisment!), but it's not official. I've been to slackware.com, read the installation guide, and still don't have enough info to be confortable with the installation process. ARe there any installation guides on the net THAT'S NOT ON SLACKWARE.COM? Any good ones? Thanks! I really need some help so that I don't go and mess up my box!

Have a look at the installation HOWTO at http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Instal...WTO/index.html

Insatalling Slackware isn't that bad, you just have to do more of it yourself as opposed to the installer doing it. Boot from the CD, select your keyboard, login (yeah! you do select the keyboard be the login prompt appears), run fdisk - create some partitions, run setup, choose the bits you want, wait a while for them to install and thats that! After the initial install you will probably want to run xf86cfg to get X running as this is seperate from the install.

cheers

The site looks great! Especially with ESR, who wrote it! (He's my idol, in case no one's realized!) I'm sure it'll be extremely helpful. I'm just intimidated with slack's installation because I've only just lost my dependency with GUI's. Thanks for replying.

Why do you like slack? Is it 'cause you're a true geek? I don't think too many of them exist anymore. People got too used to those GUI's!

I think a lot of my preferrence is becuase its the first distro that I played with, however I also really like the fact that there are not piles of tools to do everthing for me (in strange ways!) so I get really good control over the system (of couse you can always have tools and not use them).

Patrick Volkerding, he of Slackware, also tends to only include stable version of programs, and often leaves them to install to their default locations - meaning that while you loose the very latest versions of programs everything works well, and when you read the generic documentation for a program the directories it refers to are correct.

cheers
