The answer will depend on what sort of file it is that you downloaded - what is at the end of the file name?

Follow the instructions in this page, under the "RPM version" section.

Cool skype 1.4 beta SUSE 10.2

I completely failed to get Skype 1.4 beta to do anything except vanish from the screen, so I deleted the download. Then I found that I could not find the 1.3 .rpm file to reinstall 1.3 that worked fine !
But I did not delete the skype icon from the desktop and when I hit it the day after, up came Skype 1.4 beta ! And it works very well although (i) I cannot find a way to change the small size font it uses (ii) much more serious, it is not possible to use the radio buttons at the top right of the Skype screen. If I try to minimise it, it vanishes never to return, although it is still running somewhere .... If I try to close it, same thing. The only way to shut it down is from the gear wheel at the bottom left corner.
I have NOT downloaded any upgraded support/library files. It seems to run without them ! If anyone has a problem, then it may well be due to extra copies running in the background somewhere. If it runs, leave it alone ....
Maybe they will fix this in the final version - I hope so.
(I gave up on the web cam ages ago)
