Skype / voip programs

How does Skype work on Debian Squeeze? Are there Linux voip programs that can communicate with those using Skype?

Thanks

I don't think there are any capable of voice comunication over skype, however there is a pidgin plugin that allows to view and chat with skype frends inside piding when skype is running in background.

I have also not heard about any such tool but the idea of using Pidgin is great & I'd love to try that too. The VoIP Softphones can be installed on Debian but its a much complex stuff to make their communication with Skype. Just in my mind, may be its easily possible to use an internation DID number to communicate it with Skype but I ain't sure this solution would either work.

Nope, there aren't. Here's why.
Quote:
The Skype network is not interoperable with most other VoIP networks without proper licensing from Skype. Digium, the main sponsor of Asterisk PBX released a driver licensed by Skype dubbed 'Skype for Asterisk' to interface as a client to the Skype network, however this still remains closed source.[1] Numerous attempts to study and/or reverse engineer the protocol have been undertaken to reveal the protocol, investigate security or to allow unofficial clients.
Are you sure you want to use skype?

I need Skype to connect with someone that uses Skype for a tutorial. Does Skype work OK on Debian Squeeze? If not I will have to use Windows (prefer to use Linux). I also have XP installed.

Thanks

Short answer = yes. You need to tell us what architecture you're using. If you're using a 64bit architecture there are some packages you'll need. Oh, and why are you still using Debian Squeeze? The current Debian stable version is Wheezy.

My personal experiences with Skype on Linux have been terrible. That doesn't mean everybody's experiences are terrible though. I never got it to work correctly. It was totally unuseable. Lockups, stalls, no audio, framerates of about 2 per second, etc. And as a bonus, it really messed up the entire audio subsystem on the computer. I was trying it with Linux Mint 13 Maya. No more Skype + Linux for me.

Debian Squeeze outdated? Heck, I've still got a server running Debian Sarge! It is on a protected LAN and I have just about every service turned off, so missing out on application and security updates has not been an issue. I installed Sarge back in 2005 or 2006 I think. That server has been booted exactly twice. Once after the initial installation seven or eight years ago, and once a few years later when I had to physically move it to a different room. It's now been up for over four years since that physical move. Stable as heck.

@haertig YMMV. I'm not a big fan of skype and the 4.1 version doesn't find ("No Device Found") my usb webcam on my desktop which is instantly found by every other known software using video (cheese, xawtv, google-talk, ekiga, etc. etc. etc.). It does find the built-in video cam on my laptop. Re: outdated, sure run Sarge to you heart's content. Just don't try to add any new software or you may encounter ...uh...difficulties.
@JosephS Go to the skype website and download the Debian package. It's called "skype-debian_4.2.0.11-1_i386.deb". Navigate to where you've downloaded the package and issue the following command.
Code:
sudo dpkg -i skype-debian_4.2.0.11-1_i386.deb
(or do it as root if you don't use sudo).
I have no idea whether it will work on Squeeze.

All services of Skype are available such as File Transfer, Chat etc.., even when using a Linux OS, all you need is to get started to find Skype for Linux freeware like "Linux Skype".

This link might help you, it gives you some information about Skype in Linux.
