Cool Skype no video from webcam

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 and have a Creative Web Cam Live.
I installed Cheese first to test my web cam and it works fine but skype has a problem with it.
My first thought is that a dependency is missing...any thoughts?

some webcams are uvcvideo compliant and others use a diff driver....quite likely a gspca module

yes its a gspca model.number 29
http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Docum...inux/gspca.txt

try this

Code:
apt-get update && apt-get install libv4l-0
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.s
if that works, you need to run the last 2 commands each time you run skype....best to make it a script?

I do not have a gspca model ....mine's a uvcvideo model.

good luck

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype gets the following line

ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.

Perhaps I should get another webcam ..any recomendations?

Thumbs up

It works for me, my webcam is a A4-Tech PK-5, lsusb says
Code:
 Bus 005 Device 003: ID 0ac8:303b Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. ZC0303 Webcam
, looked in the links above and saw that it is also a gspca model.
First did
Code:
apt-get update && apt-get install libv4l-0
all fine here
Then i did
Code:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
which gave me the error
Code:
stefan@aptosidbox-stef:~$ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
Then press CTRL+C to exit the hang.
So, thinking that the most common issues in unix-like systems is file location, i went root and did
Code:
upgradedb
which creates an index with all the files on your computer and their location.
So I searched the file with
Code:
# locate v4l1compat.so
and got
Code:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so
/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so
After that I wrote the PRELOAD function again using the new location found
Code:
stefan@aptosidbox-stef:~$ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
and a new session of skype started automaticaly with video support

Tested the connection with a friend who was running Windows Vista and we had a perfect video call.

Hope this helpes
Thank you for your support, I did it because of you
