I am writing a small archiving script, which saves selected directories and files onto a cd. I intend to burn the iso-s on the fly, without saving the iso images inbetween.
However, in that case I don't know really how big the iso image will be. I have calculated the size using 'du' but is this the relevant number? Do I need to add something for boundary information? How much space there is on a CD(-RW)? On the package it is written 700MB, but is this correct? What happens if I try to burn a bit more?
So, I have a lot of questions, hope' someone can explain me these issues.
normally there is 700mb on a cd, but this is flexible to an extent, and 20mb either way won't matter. not sure what you're meaning by boundary numbers... just burn it!
So, you mean that if 'du' shows <= 700MB, then it is OK?

I have heard that each session needs 13MB in addition for "session info" if burning multi-session. I guess a single-session CD has something similar. But if the size is flexible to a certain extent then it should be just fine... :-)
yeah that will be fine. in reality the 700mb is the volume of data that can be stored on a filesystem on the CD. a CD image contains that filesystem too, so can be quite a bit bigger than the size of the offical capactiy.
