Simple Grub question

I have set up a dual boot system with winxp and Suse 8.1 on the first drive and an 80 gig drive for data.

Whilst experimenting with the setup I removed the 2nd hard drive.

Now in Windows (spit) this would cause no problems .

But when i rebooted grub gave me a hard disk error !

Surely this cant be right?

what if i wanted to change the drive or it crashed ! I would have a perfectly good windows and linux system that i could not boot too?

pleas tell me i'm wrong or i should use LILO or something

you can fix almost anything with a boot/root floppy, without one there is little that can be done, other than pass some commands to the kernel using the grub prompt.

You may have changed the location of the root filesystem.

if so you can tell the kernel where it is

kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hda5
