There is a Linux version of Maya.

There is also an OpenSource program called "Blender". I am not sure if it is similar to maya since I have never used it.

I'm actually interested in this. I've never known how to use maya or any of that and I would like to learn. So for linux, which of the two, Blender and equinox, do you guys like better?

there were some 3d renderers like ayam, Aqsis and others using The Blue Moon Rendering Tools
which was a compatible replacement for RenderMan
but they got sued and shut down by pixar

don't know where all that stands right now
nvidia bought The Blue Moon Rendering Tools but appearently has done nothing with it
