Silly newbie question
 

I am new to Linux so forgive me for the following silly question. During the install, I chose to have no root password and did not make any user name and password for myself. At the time, I was thinking that I didn't need any password protection and didn't want to be prompted with a user and password box. I am a windows user and I have always left it blank and windows would disable the username and password prompt by default. As you may have already guessed, I am now faced with with user and password box and I cannot login with blank fields! Please help? BTW, I am using grub for my dual boot. Is there a way to disable this prompt because I am the only one using this compter and I don't want any hindrances?

On the no root password login as username root and don't enter a password just hit enter. If this logs you in I would then recommend making a normal user. I windows you have just one user. In linux you have root (controls all) and your normal user. If you run as root for your everday and stuff you could really screw something up :eek: try something the 'usradd'

Another way to recover/change the root password is to boot into single-user mode. You can do this by typing "linux 1" (without the quotes) at the LILO prompt when your computer boots (if you get a LILO prompt). If you have a menu of boot options, see if there is one called "fail safe" or "single user" or something like that.

This'll let you become root without entering a password. I'd recommend using a password, rather than blank space. Make it something easy to remember, or even write it down on a slip of paper nearby if there's no way someone could break into your house and look at it :) Passwords aren't a huge deal if your computer isn't online full-time.

The same goes for your regular user. In general, hard-to-guess passwords are good, but if you don't expect anyone you don't trust to be having access to your computer, you can make it really easy.

Well I did almost as bad. I fiferd I would not install a firewall at all and after reading my linx boot it told me I should have put on one. But atleast I have a very good root password.

Althow I don't have a clue how to fix it I need to read more.
