Question Shutdown not reboot

Hi there

I have asked this in the past, only to forget when I need it.

My Mandrake 8.1 PC always reboots when I shut it down, instead of just shutting down. How do I change this?

Thanks heaps!

From the command line (virtual terminal), as root, type this.

bash2.05$ shutdown -h now

This will halt the machine so you can turn it off.

That's my point, selecting shutdown from the K/Start button causes my machine to reboot. I am pretty sure it even says it's halting, only to reboot.

I guess the -h in 'shutdown -h now' is the halt flag. I'll try it, but don't expect it to work.

Any more suggestions? Can anyone explain what files are referenced and in what order when the system is shutdown.

Thanks!

well I don't know what to think of that. I would have to say a good place to start would be
$man init
but that is a guess. I know when you poweroff from the cli you get a message about INIT sending the TERM signals...so I would start there. Anybody else got an idea?

also see

$man poweroff
$man shutdown

It has to be a goosed config file somewhere. As an aside, it might help to back up your files and try to re rpm KDE. I don't know if that would do it, but I doubt your system is unable to shutdown, rather I would think it has something to do with the KDE install and what command it is issuing to the kernel.
