I'm currently running RedHat 9.0 and I'm very happy with it, what are some of the reasons why I should upgrade to Fedora other that Redhat 9.0 is no longer supported? Does fedora use a newer version of the kernel (like 2.6)? Also, I've heard the current release of fedora messes up your GUI when you bootup, whats that all about? Maybe I should wait till they debug/fine tune Fedora before upgrading or is it suitable to download the 3 .ISO's and performing an "upgrade" so I can preserve my current configuration?

Please give me your feedback on this topic.

Red Hat does not support Fedora either. Fedora is the free, bleeding edge, unsupported version of Red Hat.

I never had that problem.

Upgrading in place on top of an existing system is asking for trouble. Instead you should install any new system in its own partition(s) and dual boot. After you get Fedora stable then you can copy over your data and erase your old system.

only reason I can see to update is because Red Hat will no longer be giving updates for 9 in the comming months. Fedora was having troubble with Up2date but I do beleive that is all fixed now and you should beable to update your Fedora box's very easy and fast as long as you use one of the mirror sites such as GaTech for your updates.

Well being a long time reader and lean on posts... ....i dont mean to offend anyone here, but i had the hang up at run level 5 also.......so i upgraded to Fedora with no problems, smooth as silk!!!.......excpt on updating......but i am using up2date to do it, which i dont think i should be.......any suggestions here on updating

Red Hat will no longer support new versions unless you pay the commercial price for it. Also since RH considers this a commercial version, they have removed some items from the packages, that they consider not needed in a commercial product. Unless you are looking strictly for a server and not a general purpose OS, the time has come to stay away from it.

As for Fedora, it is and always will be in beta mode. Whoever uses it will be Red Hat's guinea pig. RH uses Fedora as it's test bed for what it may later apply to it's commercial Red Hat distribution.

The choice now boils down to using Fedora, a bleeding edge distro, or looking for a more stable distribution such as Debian or Mandrake. or Suse.

you should not have a problem updating if you set it upi to use one of the mirror sites such at gatech it should update with no problems
