Shareaza and magnet links
 

I run Shareaza 2.2.5.5 with WINE 0.9.42, and I'm wondering if it's possible to make it handle magnet links. I've noticed that WINE applications can interact with native ones (example: opening URLs with Firefox), but what about the other way around?

You mean, can you get firefox, say, to play a media stream in WMP7 running in wine? Or You open a text file and it opens in WordPad also in guess where?

Sure... but you have to configure your system to do that.

But I am not sure what this has to do with magnet links...

I've looked at the Wikipedia article, but what I need to know is how to make Shareaza handle the magnet protocol, so that when I click a magnet link in a web browser, it opens with Shareaza.

Run the firefox for windows version inside wine.

I could do that, but I was hoping for a less quick-and-dirty method. :)

At this point, the Magnet and ED2K protocols aren't associated with anything.

Wine can be installed with yum install wine (IIRC). Shareaza is installed to wine in the same way as any windows program. But you should consider obtaining the same functionality usinf free software.

If you install Sun Java, limewire is supposed to be as good as shareaza.

[edit]There is a sourceforge page for the Linux Shareaza project, dunno whats with the site though - couldn't find anything there.

Note: It's not a good idea to call people you don't know "dear" in an international forum. In almost all English speaking countries it is insulting. (Outside a formal letter or a marriage.) Just a heads up.

Shareaza (especially the latest version) is actually BETTER than Limewire. To start with, it gets the same search results (assuming you aren't using a filter) because connects to the same network, and will connect to up to 5 ultra-peers (which is EXACTLY what Limewire Pro does that gives you "better/faster results" and whatnot. It also connects to Gnutella2, its own network, as well as eDonkey2000 and Bittorrent. So Shareaza is basically Limewire Pro PLUS G2/eD2k/BT and MINUS the hideous Java interface. The only downside is that it only runs on Windows or WINE, although it could be ported to other platforms because it's Free Software.
