Setting up address book

What is the best way to set up an address book to be accessible by Thunderbird e-mail and by mail-merge in OpenOffice?

Ubuntu 5.10
Gnome 2.12
OOo 2
Thunderbird 1.0.7 and 1.5 (in transition)
