Heres the story. I installed the phpBB2 bulletin board on my web site. When you go to register as a new user it lets you register but the php page returns and SMTP error. Register and have a look for yourself
here. Now according to my RedHat book SMTP should need little or no configuration after install. Thinking that I may have messed up a setting along the way I uninstalled all the sendmail packages and then re-installed them. After installing I started sendmail:
/etc/init.d/sendmail start
It starts without a problem. Now I thought that when sendmail was running it would open up a port on your machine.(I think port 25) I scanned myself and found no such port open.
The only thing the php board is trying to do is send a confirmation e-mail to the newly registered users. I figured because it only needs to sendmail then there would be no need to configure a POP server.
Basically I'm lost. Mail is not my expertise in Linux and I was a little discouraged to read this:
"The sendmail.cf file is legendary (and infamous) for arcane syntax, nearly indecipherable rule sets, and its capability to make an admistrator tear out hair."-RedHat 8.0 Bible
