Sendmail did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA

FC3 running sendmail and dovecot.

Have a Windows client that sends/receives fine through this linux mail server, as long as is using Outlook Express...

If I use Thunderbird as the mail client from the Windows computer, I can receive no problem, but when I send it continually asks for the password, once I give up entering it I see this error in maillog:

"did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA"

I've googled this and the only shred of a clue I've seen is to have my /etc/mail/access file setup to have the ip's of those who will use the server as a RELAY. I've done that and Thunderbird still won't send...

I've also read to make sure that when the mail client tries to connect it connects with pop3 first, then smtp...
I don't see any way to change that in either OE or Thunderbird.

Yea, I know, I could just ignore this and use OE...

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN

Hi All,

Regarding "did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA, Please check on your sendmail.mc is there FEATURE(`dnsbl', `relays.ordb.org', `Rejected - see http://ordb.org/')dnl line. If it so please make it dnl for the same that means comment it. Then recompile your sendmail.mc and then restart your sendmail. You will not have this problem and also you will get all mails which was not able to receive earlier.

This is due to closed the services of (relay.ordb.org) from 31st Dec 2006 onwards.

Regards
Vijay

I have exactly the same problem here. I can send mail using Outlook 2003 but get the same behaviour and error as reported above when using Thunderbird (both 1.5 and 2.0) from the same machine. It can not be a problem on the server, it must be something specific to Thunderbird even though the smtp configuration is the same in both clients.

Anyone has any clues?

Thanks a lot.

We had this problem with a RHEL4 sendmail server and fixed it by going into the account settings for the outgoing server (SMTP) and unticking the 'Use name and password' box.
