Sendmail/Crontab "Deferred" question

Crontab is trying to send mail to root when a program fails, but for some reason sendmail complains:

sm-msp-queue[21699]: gAL5C9Ee018961: to=postmaster, delay=11:59:59, xdelay=00:13:09, mailer=relay, pri=2191352, relay=localhost.com. [10.20.40.80], dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Connection timed out with localhost.com.

sm-msp-queue[21699]: gAL0RqPX017826: to=root, delay=16:57:27, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=2730070, relay=localhost.com., dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Connection timed out with localhost.com.

I don't know why it's trying to connect with localhost.com. There's either an error with named, sendmail, or crontab. I can't find it though. Any help would be appreciated

No, I never figured it out. I just kinda fixed the thing that was making it do that, but of course the problem would return if I mess with anything....

I still don't know what the problem is....

The "deferred" mail is probably sitting in /var/spool/mqueue so you can read to see what it's trying to send you.

Other than that, is sendmail even running on this machine? Can you do this:

# telnet localhost 25

Does it answer? Can you interact with it?

Sounds like there's nothing to connect to there... Just a guess.

Yeah, I have sendmail running. The problem was that it was trying to contact localhost.com which is something else, I forgot how the problem arose, I think it was because something was messed up and crontab was trying to send me mail (but at localhost.com) and failing...
