sending SMS messages from the command line

I am already doing this from my mobile phone.

But can I send SMS messages to relatives, from the command line?
They all have SMS enabled phones.
I just don't know their phone service provider.

Is there any package/rpm that will do this?

This will be a very low volume activity.
Maybe sending 2 SMS per week.

If your phone's supported, gammu should be just what you're looking for.

Do I need to use my phone?
Isn't there a command line utility that sends the SMS directly via the internet to the recipient without using my mobile phone?

Usually you have to find an ISP which allows you to send him a message, and then the ISP can translate it to SMS and forward it to the subscriber.

AFAIK usually this is done by sending an e-mail to a certain address with some special subject of message body formatting. This is mostly a paid service though.

The problem is not in Linux, but in find someone who provides you the service. Once such a provider is found, it should be easy. For example, Cisco switches send SMS-es all the time.
