Segmentation fault (core dumped) when installing bin file
Hi there,
I want to install StarOffice 5.2, I have a bunch of work done with StarOffice 5.1 on Windows and not available in the net for Linux, 5.2 would work, so I downloaded so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin from several independent sources. I put the bin file in a newly created so52 directory in my home directory. Each time I tried to install it, I did the following in the terminal:
cd /.../so2
sudo cdmod +x so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin
./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin
It starts reading libraries and then a message "Segmentation fault (core dumped)" pops up.
The first time I thought the bin file was corrupted, I found a new source, again an error message, a third bin file resulted the same. What am I doing wrong?
I run Ubuntu 7.04.
Can someone help me please?
I need this StarOffice 5.2 badly.
Star Office 5.2 is very old (released 1998!), and probably uses some library which is no longer binary compatible with the versions of libraries in the much more modern Ubuntu 7.04. It has been 9 years!
I recommend simply using OpenOffice which is in the Ubuntu repositories. It almost certainly does everything StarOffice 5.2 can do, and a whole lot more.

Thank you Matthewg42, I have OpenOffice installed but when I try to open some of my old files done with StarOffice 5.1 - like text documents, text templates, impress doc and templates - it either crashes or ask me to choose a filter from a list, and I do it - and then: error. I can still open these with StarOffice 5.1 through Wine, but this makes me sick ... and .... it crashes every now and then, too! I just feel stuck!
That makes me hate Windows even better but in the end, I will have to use it again! Hugh!
Aha, I see the reason now. If you install the package openoffice.org-filter-binfilter you might have some luck. The quick description of the package is:

Legacy filters (e.g. StarOffice 5.2) for OpenOffice.org

Matthewg42, thanks again! I installed the binfilter and openoffice DOES open the staroffice5.1 presentation and text files, though not their full features and sounds. And, veeeeeeeeeerry slowly. I guess it's the best result in this situation, so I will have to think of another solution, because I don't feel like remaking all this bunch of stuff I really need.
Have a nice weekend!
In your situation, if I had the old win32 StarOffice, I would use that. I would probably try to export those to some format which can then be converted into OpenOffice...
Thank you, Matthew, again. I could remake the old files, but I have a lot of wav sound in them. Now, OpenOffice doesn't recognize these. I can see that the Insert/Object/Sound option in presentations is unaccessible. Could this be due to some not installed or missing modules or something? I just assume that if the option were enabled, the software would recognize the .wav objects and play them? Have you any idea about how to insert a wav sound in an Openoffice presentation?
