Security camera record system

Hello all,

I am attempting to set up a security system using Fedora Core 4, Test 3, 64-bit. I would like some suggestions about a good Digital Video Recorder software package to use, preferably free or low-cost. This software should control the pan, tilt, and zoom functions of the cameras over an IP connection, be seen over an IP connection, and be easy to use after setup. Also, I need to pick a DVR input card that will be compatible with this Linux-based app. This card should be capable of 240fps and 640x480 across 8 channels.

I suppose I'll also need help with Apache at a later date.

Another question: Do security camera DVR cards typically have a seperate signal line to control a PTZ camera, or is the controlling signal sent down the same wire as the video signal?

Please be gentle. I'm not that good at Linux yet. Hopefully that'll change with projects like this.

Thanks in advance,

PS I already have the OS set up thanks to help from others on this system.

I think ZoneMinder might be the software you're looking for.

Did you get it to work ? I'm thinking of doing this because of the crime problems where I live (it is getting really bad in London now).
I am thinking of getting an old pc and running Linux on it and using it as a home security system.

How did you find a place for this :-
'Automatic uploading of matching events to external FTP storage for archiving and data security.'

I've gotten it to work, but the final installation isn't complete as the 25-foot palm trees on which the cameras will hang haven't been planted.

I would suggest to those tat are planning a simple system to use IP-based cameras instead. They are simple to use, set up, and they have their own Apache webserver built right in the camera chip.

If you are looking for slight-of-hand type movement, get a system w/video input card like mine. For something not so expensive, you can skimp on the input card.
