We are planning to setup a system status LCD screen to display a few status webpages (nagios etc..) from our systems and would like to make sure the machine hosting the output to the LCD screen is locked down. aka kiosk mode.

Is their any kind of application which could securely stream the contents (video feed? vnc?) of the desktop of a workstation to another machine? (mplayer?)

Machine 1 - Displays 4 auto updating webpages/applications. User authenticated via apache web authentication. This machine will be in a secure place (data center). Send a secure video stream to Machine 2.

Machine 2 - Connected to a LCD screen in the NOC. Receive the secure video stream from Machine 1. This machine will be dedicated to receive the video stream from Machine 1 and not used for anything else. We do not want anyone with physical access to Machine 1 to be able to make changes to the display.

Could anyone suggest any software/config to achieve this?

When you say video stream, you mean the remote desktop, as opposed to, say, and mpg2 movie, right?

Yes, you can use VNC, either with an encryption plug-in, or via VPN or SSH encrypted tunnel.

You could also use NX or FreeNX, a perhaps better performing alternative.
