Question Searching for an email archiving software - similar to Open Benno

Hello,

I'm searching for a software, pretty much like Open Benno
http://www.openbenno.org
But it seems as this project is dead (no mailinglists anymore, no news since 2010, ...)

Is there an alternative?
I'd like to have all my emails from free mailers and private mail servers in one huge searchable software that I can access easily from a browser.

Thanks,
Chris

I've never used any dedicated software for archiving mail before, but if you tell us what exactly you are looking for we may be able to help you better. From what you say in your post, any mail client will suit your purpose.

I've got a few things that I'd like to achive:

First of all:
Working from Laptop, Desktop, Smartphone and sometimes from other Computers. So I'd like to be able to access my emails, somtimes even from 1 - 2 years back.

With the top account I use IMAP and it keeps on hitting the quota - so I have to push it further every 6 months or so.
I have all emails on my local desktop but as soon as I archive the in Thunderbird, they'll be removed from the server and I can't access them anymore from the laptop or other devices.

It would be important for me that this software supports plenty of accounts and has a very good search available. (Show me all mails from this person written between 90 and 180 days back etc.)

Eventually it would be nice to do an easy backup solution (just a DB dump + a webspace directory seems to be quite nice - compared to some other mail backup solutions I've seen).

Open Benno seems to do most of this - but it seems as well there is no development going on anymore.
I didn't find others, seems to be either some weird thought/request or a brilliant idea

Hope you guys know anything.
Bye, Chris

Setup your own IMAP server (dovecot or such) and keep your mail in that (either as your primary mail source - getting the others with fetchmail or such, or just use it as an archive and shift mail to it as you like with your mail client).
A simple file backup of the mailbox(es) takes care of that side.

Question

Oh .. didn't know this - so I can use fetchmail to receive mails from hotmail, gmail, etc. as well as a private server and simply let it fetch into a dovecot?
How about the mails sent?
Would I need to configure something like a relay myself or is there a possibility to get all sent mails into the dovecot as well?

Pretty much.
I use fetchmail, postfix and dovecot as a "full service" mail server.
You can run it this way if you want, although outbound SMTP can be a bit tricky from a "consumer" ip.
An easier way would be to continue using your current SMTP and set your client's 'sent' folder to be on your IMAP.
Or set a BCC rule for outgoing, or something.

I would say, just set up dovecot for a start and try it out as a manual archive/storage system, by just copying mail to it with Thunderbird.
If that is going to work for what you want, you can look at adding the other features later.
