scsi-emulation, cdrecord, and xsane problems

This all started when I wanted to try out mkCDrec. It seems like a good application, however I am having some difficulty. Originally cdrecord -scanbus was working properly. I then implemented scsi-emulation so I could copy the .iso to CD at a later date, and now cdrecord -scanbus doesn't find the writer, but xcdroast does.
Also, now with scsi-emulation my scanner doesn't work either.
What do I do?

if you're on a 2.6 kernel, drop the scsi emulation totally, you won't need it (save for some UI burner programs which haven't been updated yet, if ever) cdrecord itself works fine with pure ide access now

But then I run into the problem where xcdroast doesn't recognize my writer.
