Screen reverts to lower resolution when not root - CentOS guest on VMWare ESXi
Hi,
I'm running a fresh install of CentOS 5.2 on VMWare ESXi and have VMWare Tools installed. During the installation of VMWare Tools I set the resolution to start with as 1024x768, and when I restart the machine it shows as 1024x768 when the login prompt is displayed. If I login as root the desktop displays as 1024x768. When I however login with a different userid the desktop displays as 800x600. If I change the resolution to 1024x768 with Gnome's desktop config as the non-root user I get a message stating that xorg.conf has been updated and I need to restart X, which I've tried with no success ( restarts as 800x600 ). If I go back to Gnome desktop config before restarting X it shows 800x600. I've tried "sudo xrandr -s" in which case the display does change to 1024x768, but reverts when I reboot. I've also tried making root the primary group for the userid and setting 1024x768 using Gnome desktop config - with the same result. The machine has all the latest updates. Bit at my wits end - as far as I know the same xorg.conf is used irrespective of who I login as. Please excuse any inaccuracies or obviously silly mistakes and omissions in the above as I'm relatively new to Linux. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks - Sean  |
Did you try changing it with the resolution tool?
On your panel, click System, Preferences and Screen Resolution. Select what you'd like and set it as a default for the system. Hopefully that will work. |
Carl - Thanks a lot for that - It did indeed work !
Many thanks Sean Quote:
