Angry screen res probs with tux racer

having problems with intermittent sudden drop in screen resolution to 600x480
have installed suse 9.0 today.

when I start tux racer from command line I get the following messages - the game plays perfectly well but at a screen resolution that means I can't see a substantial portion of the edges (the timer is off the screen at the left, & right is just about ok). sometimes this massive resolution continues on the normal display too.

thanks
