screen does not display characters correctly

Hi, I'm using the program screen so that I can access terminal sessions from multiple locations. It's working wonderfully except for when I'm talking a German speaking channel on irssi. All of the special characters like ä, ö, and ü. Instead they show up as a bunch of weird symbols. The server that is hosting the screen sessions is running fedora core 6. I'm connecting to the server through putty and aterm. I've been poking around in screenrc but I don't really know what I should be looking for.

The question is what is it using as the locale settings,
and which encoding is it using. Same for the local settings
of your putty/aterm. You'd want them to match.

Try exporting LANG to some UTF charset.

Cheers,
Tink
