SCIM and OpenOffice on Gnome

Like many people it seems, I'm having trouble getting SCIM to work. Viewing other threads, it seems Mandrake users often have problems getting it to work with Thunderbird and Firefox, while Debian users (including myself) and Debian-based users have problems with OpenOffice.

I have entered:

$ export LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.UTF-8; export XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM; scim -d

and:

# gtk-query-immodules-2.0 > /etc/gtk-2.0/gtk.immodules

The SCIM icon appears on my bottom tool panel and SCIM works perfectly well with Thunderbird, Firefox, AbiWord and gedit but not The GIMP, OpenOffice or Java applications. Using "Smart Pinyin" entry I just get the English/Roman characters I type.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be glad to hear them.

Using: Debian Sarge, Kernel 2.6.7-1-686, Gnome 2.8.1, OpenOffice1.1.2dfsg1-3
