sc_trans_linux and the slowbox
 

ok, i have a 200mhz Compaq Proliant that i want to stream music from, i am using sc_trans to do this to stream it to a linux server, yet i come accross a fancy issue in which it takes a crapload of CPU usage and when it hits 100%, the buffering comes in

I am not sure why it does this, the first 30 seconds of the stream are perfect, then every 10 seconds it buffers

The OS is RH9... is there any way to get this to work on the 200 mhz with 64 megs of ram or must i use one of the 400 mhz i have?

I assume its dumping memory and it may be pagefile memory and not the hard memory...

any thoughts?

200 mhz may not be enough if the streaming is high quality. You can try decking the thing out in ram and adding more swap space but I think you may need a better cpu. Just my 2 cents.

hmm well the board is dual-supported, i just need a VRM and i have extra processors, ill add more ram and see where that goes as i have aplenty of that. I put 1.5 GB of swap space, but it seems that maybe because the mp3's are on a second hd its causing problems.

When i watch the lights, every time it hits the second hd the stream skips, so im going to try and move the mp3's to the main drive to see if that solves some skipping.

Good idea - sometimes crossing between two Hd's can be slow [in any OS]. Take into consideration the IDE cables - make sure they are newer ones - 40 pin 80 connector - if the board supports it. Also the speed of the Hd's should be a factor.

I believe you prolly found the problem by the sound of it.
