save paths in OpenOffice.org2.0 on FedoraCore4.0
 

I use FedoraCore4.0 with Gnome graphical interface.
My problem is this: I downloaded a .doc file from an online storage space and it was automatically opened in OpenOffice.org Writer. It put that file into my /tmp directory. I didn't want it saved there, so i dragged the file into a /documents directory in my /home. Instead of moving it, it simply made a copy. Fine, i thought, I'll just delete this one in the /tmp, and any changes i make to the .doc will be saved to the second copy. :o Wrong I was. After making substantial changes to the document and clicking the save icon periodically, I woke up this morning to an unchanged document.:(
Thing is this: I was pressing save(not Save As), so it must have been saving somewhere. But obviously the path was not to my /documents copy of the .doc. I've been back to the /tmp to see if it remade the .doc(i had deleted the original), but it is not there, even among hidden files. I've also searched my /mozilla/firefox and /.openoffice.org2.0 caches and subdirectories to no avail. Additionally I've run a find .-name "*.doc" in my home directory without finding the modified .doc.
I'm fairly new to Linux, so any ideas as to where this .doc could have gone would be greatly appreciated.

It is possible that OpenOffice saved the file in the OpenDocument file format. Look for a filename with .odt as the extension. Also, you can find out what OpenOffice default directory settings are by going into the Tools->Options menu, and looking under OpenOffice.org->Paths.

Also, OpenOffice should list the file under it's File->Recent Documents menu.

Indeed---the default "save" in OOo is in its native format

Search on the file name without the extension
