Samsung CLP510 printer on SuSE 11.2

I have a Samsung CLP - 510 laser printer and I am running SuSE 11.2.
The newer Gutenprint supports it nicely however, now and then there is a problem with printing. Sometimes if I want a two sided document printed, I get this error message:

SPL-C ERROR - Incomplete Session by time out
POSITION: 0xd5174 (872820)
SYSTEM: SPL/os_hook
LINE: 1096
VERSION: SPL-C 1.28 09-15-2004

But I finally can get it to print both sides but I had to completely clear the printer queue (from within CUPS: delete ALL jobs) then tried again and then it worked. The problem is that you have to waste paper in order to get it to work. Today, I wanted just one side printed and I got the same error time out message. My husband had to make the printer print from Windows first then it worked for me on Linux.

When I was running SuSE 10.0, I had to follow these manual directions:

this is what I had to do with SuSE 10.0 and Puppy: These instructions have been put here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=36671

This is how I added my Samsung CLP-510 laser printer (in SuSE 10 and Puppy). I got these directions from this Linux Printing.org page: http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...amsung-CLP-510 This gives more instruction on which folders to look in.

Get the Samsung CLP driver from here http://www.softwaredriverdownload.co...ux_driver.html

Copy mfp to: /usr/lib/cups/backend/ Copy all the samsung filters to: /usr/lib/cups/filter Copy libmfp.so.1.0.1 to: /usr/lib and the Samsung ppd to: /usr/share/cups/model/

I got the duplex mode to work (on Puppy and SuSE 10.0): There was another ppd file that I had on my SuSE 10.0 system so I just copied that one over to Puppy also. I don't remember where I got the original from, maybe from the Samsung install disk. So, the 2 ppd's are named: samsungCLP510.ppd and CLP-510splc.ppd. At this point, I don't remember which folder these were put in, most likely /usr/share/cups/model .

-------------
**
My question is:
1) would it do any good or confuse Gutenprint/CUPS if I were to add the samsungCLP510.ppd and CLP-510splc.ppd to the /usr/share/cups/model/Samsung directory?
2) And how can I find out what is causing the timeout error message? The printer or CUPS or Gutenprint?

I haven't tried to follow the instructions from my old SuSE 10.0 because it seems that the contents of the mentioned folders are different and I don't want to ruin things.

Hi gymnart, Have you tried the Splix drivers?

http://splix.ap2c.org/

Attempting to answer your questions:

1. Couldn't break anything permanently since you know exactly what changes you're making. It's not like an update/package upgrade where tracking down the changes made to the system could be a real pain.

2. Try CUPS with loglevel debug enabled in your cupsd.conf.

Good luck. ;-)

How do you enable the log for cups? Is that a separate package that I have to install?

Can I have both Splix and Gutenprint together on one machine? Or would it cause a conflict?

I just tried it with the additional ppd's (samsungCLP510.ppd, CLP-510splc.ppd, and CLP-510splc.ppd.gz). In Yast 2 show up. The first one did not print so I tried using the 2nd one (from within YaST). This time, I told YaST to print a test page (nothing came out of the printer though but I did see the light blinking).

Then I tried printing a 2 page document (from within OpenOffice.org) but the printer spat out this error message:

SPL-C ERROR - FALSE
POSITION : 0x34a91 (215697)
SYSTEM : SPL/xL_image
LINE : 511
VERSION : SPL-C 1.28 09-15-2004

Then I cancelled all jobs for the printer. After that, I tried printing the two page document again and that worked so I tried out a 1 page document and it printed nicely, then I tried a 3 page document and that printed well too.

Even though it all looks good now, there's no telling if things will continue this way or if it will give me trouble again next time I turn the computer on again.

Open up /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and change the following:

Code:
# Log general information in error_log - change "info" to "debug" for
# troubleshooting...
LogLevel info

I wouldn't expect problems as long as you only assign one as the printer driver and not both.

Good luck. ;-)

This is the most difficult type of problem to diagnose, intermittent. Let us know if it isn't working.

Good luck. ;-)

So, I can have the Samsung set to use the Splix driver and the Epson set to use the Gutenprint driver?

Yes, you should be able to choose different drivers/ppd's for different printers.

Good luck. ;-)
