samba shares take an age to connect

HI there!

Okay, my basic problem is the length of time it takes for samba shares to auto-mount. I've tried just editing my fstab file and using the amazing GUI in PCLinuxOS but it still takes about 5-10 minutes before I can actually access the shares on my (debian) server.

I know, I know, PCLinuxOS is just too high-level and I should just install debian or gentoo (I have those on muy other two machines). I just don't want to give up on PCLinuxOS - I was so amazaed with it to begin with - it installed so quick I was amazed. THis PC is downstairs in the living room you see and I couldn't be bothered with faffing about with it too much.

So, does anyone have a solution to my strange problem. I'm doing exactly the same as on my gentoo and debian distro's but for some reason PCLinuxOS is freaking out about it.

Heeeelp meeee!

What happens when you mount manually? Does it still take forever?

I know, stupid question, but still. . .

Not a stupid question at all. If I mount maually, it works fine! Only a problem when automounting from fstab. This is what I don't understand.

Check your fstab once again. You might have something just slightly wrong; ie, wrong option, wrong user being passed, something like that.

I find it helps to hard code the host names into your /etc/hosts too. I don't rely on SMB to locate the hosts.

I will check my fstab again but surely if it eventually connects then it must be right, no?

It's annoying me greatly.
