If the firewall is the usual Red Hat iptables stuff created by lokkit, you can add something like this to the file /etc/sysconfig/iptables to let samba through:

# samba and the swat web-based samba configurator
-A RH-Lokkit-0-50-INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 139 -j ACCEPT
-A RH-Lokkit-0-50-INPUT -p udp -m udp --dport 137:138 -j ACCEPT
-A RH-Lokkit-0-50-INPUT -p udp -m udp --sport 137:138 -j ACCEPT
-A RH-Lokkit-0-50-INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 901 -j ACCEPT

You might be better off with a stronger firewalling system like Shorewall (or an external firewall, that can protect all your systems) though.

Well, I simply disabled Lokkit and it worked. Thing is I don't really need a firewall on linux (I think), because it connects through the internet using a WindowsXP machine, which is already firewalled with ZoneAlarm.

ZoneAlarm is good software; you should be OK as long as your Windows box doesn't get any Email worms. Even if you do get swen (or whatever) ZoneAlarm should pick up the outgoing SMTP and warn you.

Glad it worked out!

Ahh I'm not quite sure... I know that my cable modem has a built-in DHCP, so I guess not.

You can also get a list of shared resources by typing the following:

smbclient -U username -L machine

instead of smbclinet -U% -L machine
