here is something to read up on smartd...so do it and understand that the issues are...

linuxjournal

smartd.conf

it is probably a bad sector or something even though you tried two drives...it could be either drive if you have two...or both...

I tried it with both a windows XP machine and a Win2k VM, and they did fine. So either this machine is having problems or Windows XP x64 edition has some problems with Samba.

Thanks again for the suggestions. I was sort of hoping it was a problem on the Linux side, since those are usually easier to track down/fix (at least for me).
