Samba Frustrations

Hmm.. this is probably the 5th, or maybe 6th time attempting to get Samba to work... so I'm now turning to you guys.

The problem is this - when i go into network neighbourhood on the Windows XP box and double click the samba machine i just get a box asking for a password, with the username greyed out but displaying sambabox\guest.

My smb.conf couldnt really get any simpler, so i cant see whats up with it. If i try to directly access it with Start -> run -> \\10.0.0.8 it does the same thing.

smb.conf listing is below.. Any help appreciated guys!

[global]
netbios name = NETRA
netbios aliases = NETRA
server string = Solaris CIFS Server
security = SHARE
log level = 2
log file = /usr/local/samba/var/log.%m
max log size = 250
os level = 65
dns proxy = No
guest account = guest
smb passwd file = /usr/local/samba/private/smbpasswd

[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /usr/spool/samba
printable = Yes
browseable = No

[adam]
comment = Adams Home
path = /export/home/adam
guest account = ftp
read only = No

Dude,

I've followed everything on your website and am now using your smb.conf and am now getting the following:

The server is listed in network neighbourhood, but if I try to access it windows gives me a 'Network path not found' error.

smb.conf is now...

[global]
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
printing = cups
dns proxy = no
security = user
encrypt passwords = yes # This is needed for Win95 OS2 and up to authenticate passwords
workgroup = WORKGROUP # This is the name of your work group that shows up in network neighbor hood
server string = Solaris CIFS Server
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
netbios name = Netra # This your server name
log file = /usr/local/samba/var/log.&m
os level = 45
wins support = true
printcap name = lpstat
max log size = 50

[adam] # This is the name of the share as it will show up in network neighbor hood
path = /export/home/adam # path to the directory that you want to share, such as /home/share
writable = yes
valid users = adam # Names of valid users for this share
create mode = 775
directory mode = 775
write list = adam # Names of users with write permissions
read list = adam # Names of users with read-only permmisions

Did you set the local file permissions? If not tpye chmod 777 /export/home/adam. This will give read/write to everybody.
