Samba...

I have the latest version of Samba installed on Suse 9.0 Pro. I can view and change into the shared directories from a Windows machine, but it won't let me copy anything to or from the shared directory. What am I missing? Also, my smb.conf file is awfully small, unlike all the examples I have read on the net. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You basically don't have the correct write permissions on the directory you are attempting to copy into.

You need to make it writable by whichever user is attempting to write to it.

If it's the users home directory then perhaps you just have a setting wrong in the smb.conf file (you need to say 'read only = no'

Below is a simple smb.conf file that lets users use there own home directories (and write to them):

[global]
workgroup = windows.int
netbios name = linuxownz

[homes]
guest ok = no
read only = no

---

Of course this has no separate shares.

I imagine the problem is permissions though do a ls -al in the directory that you are trying to write to and post the output, or just correct it yourself if you know what you want.

Regards,
Chad

Ok, thanks chado, I will do this as soon as I can get to it. If I enable the home directory shares it will work fine, I just can't get a global share to work properly. Of course I am battling between using Webmin's interface and the command prompt interface. Perhaps I should just stick with command prompt only.

Ok, thanks again Chad. I figured it out. I really didn't care for individual user "home" shares, I just wanted a single "public" share. You were right on the write permissions and that lead me in the right direction. I ended up having to place "force create mode = 0775" and "force directory mode = 6775" in the smb.conf file. All seems to be working right now.

Thanks again.
