SAMBA.... ~Stuck-like-Chuck~

Followed basic instructions found on this site as well as others but can’t connect to dir on Linux svr (Debian). In fact and this may make sense to others but, when trying to conn via \\server\usrname (user/passwrd) works fine. What opens is simply the shared dir’s on the Win7 machine I’m already on.
I’ve followed this post http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...shares-563943/
but still can’t connect. I’m not the best with Linux but conceptually understand how things work. I’ve exhausted my resources regarding what to try next. Obviously I’m missing something but don’t know where to start. Can anyone walk me through where I may have gone wrong or push me in the right direction? One of my issues may be that I’m simply overwhelmed by the smb.conf. The only edit to this file was the addition of my share entry: see below. The way I understand it most everything in the conf is generic and shouldn’t
keep me from connecting. Thanks for any and all suggestions/help.

[data share]
comment = data dir
browsable = yes
path = /data
printable = yes
guest ok = yes
read only = no
create mask = 0700

Think I just got this..

I found that this entry is not working:

path = /data

Created this dir in Root but chgrp/chown'ed dir as another user. Samba automatically drops me in the user defined dir. Again, am I doing something wrong? Why can't I go here "/"?

When in doubt, go to the source. I've used the information on Samba's site to setup a couple of working production servers on Debian. I know the information there will help you as well. Here is the link to their "By Example" docs:

http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/

Good luck and let us know the outcome.

TY... I think I got it working. [issue] Samba was/is defaulting to [HOME] parm's which were not set correctly. Changed and can now connect but became very humbled when looking at other conf file examples and realizing the true power & potential. Man..I hate and love this OS. Thanks again.

Don't worry. Overwhelmed is a common reaction when one starts to scratch the surface of what you can be capable of in the *nix world. Your welcome.
