Running Wine on Win XP Pro

Hi all
I could install Wine from the mandrake CD, though I tried to run wine notepad but get the error message like this
[ss@sauryalap ss]$ wine notepad.exe
fixme:reg:_nt_dump_lf unknown Win XP node id 0x686c: do we need to add support f or it ?
fixme:reg:_nt_dump_lf unknown Win XP node id 0x686c: do we need to add support f or it ?
fixme:reg:_nt_dump_lf unknown Win XP node id 0x686c: do we need to add support f or it ?

I press Y
Notepad eventually runs though it is not able to save the file on Windows ( I assume because I am not root) it also doesn't save in Linux.
I am using Win XP, is it becasue of this?
Thanks

This wins the most confusing and non informative post of the year award. Why are you trying to run Wine on WinXP? When wine is a linux program?... and what exactly do you need to run notepad for?

Hi
Well Actually, I wanted to run Word on linux using Wine. Now, I know Open office does the job but what is lacking is:
There is a bibliography witing program called Endnote which people like me normally use alot for writing publishable papers. This program only works with word on Mac and PC. So I was thinking of using wine to run Word and run this Endnote program for writing references.
Do let me know if i have another option.
Apart from that I think OO word processor does not allow tracing changes, making table of contents, list of figures etc.
Thanks

Please inform yourself about OO before complaining about it. OO does support Table of Contents, list of figures etc. Not sure about tracing changes.
Maybe you should try CrossOver Office to run your word-processing-program.

BTW: dou you know why it is called "Word" ?
Well, it should be named "Letter" but crashed after the first few words typed in :D

You need to get Codeweavers Crossover Office, this runs MS Office 97/2000/XP and I had Endnote working well under this also (it's not officially supported but works, although it sometimes played up (re-launching it always solved problems)), I was using Endnote 6 and it allowed searching the internet and importing to Word, and was a great app for my Master's dissertation..

download latest wine download.
i run word, excel and dreamweaver on my mdk 9.2!
why shouldnt you?
be just sure that you edit the config file (yourhomedirectory/.wine/config) and add a fake windows folder where you will install all the softwares you want.

hulkt 11-21-2003 07:21 AM

ps: writing on ntfs partition is not recommended, i think its disabled by default in kernel. that might answer your question...
ps2: if you try to save in a folder/partition that is not indicated in wine config file, it wont simply work.
ps3: verify write access in fstab...

Hi all
Moeper please don't be offended bout my poor knowledge of OO.
Hulkt, can you please tell me where can I find the rpm for latest edition of Wine for Mandrake 9.2. What version of office are you running on that.
My Windows file system is FAT32 as I knew that NTFS is not well supported.
Thsi is the content of my .wine :
./ ../ config config.bak system.reg userdef.reg user.reg
So where can I save my files.
Can I upgrade or do I have to remove exisitng Wine and install a new one?
Thanks
SS

1. u can upgrade wine, no problem. if u remove it before installing a new version, it'll keep your config files anyway!
2. i use office 2000 that works great.
3. i use latest wine rpm that i found on rpmfind.net (should be 10-16-03)
4. in .wine folder make a "c" folder in which u put "program files/windows, etc..." folders. edit config to add a fake windows folder pointing to the c folder u just created...
5. if u lazzy or u cant get it to work, install crossover office. install office 2000 with it. then copy all files from "c" folder created by crossover office into your own /.wine/c folder. also copy the following files generated by crossover office : system.reg, userdef.reg, user.reg

Hi hulkt
Right I did install the rpm you told. however, it removed some older wine stuff from my machine. i could not run even notepad but I assume the upgrade removed the utilites rpm as well which had notepad in it.
Secondly, how do you install word in wine. I have got the Cd for MS office but when I insert it in the drive nothing happens, when I locate word.exe in and double click it, it asks for name of application which I want to open it with?
How do you go about it.
Thanks for your much needed help.
SS
