Until the ring

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hi,

I managed to install Skype on a RH9 / using Oss / and the old Wine 20031212.

Test on Gnome : lanching skype OK. Menu KO. Search a contact OK.
But no sound at all and an error message about Oss in the wine log.

Test on KDE : Using Arts, I went until the ring, but still not able to hear and speak.
A message told me there is no Recording device available for Skype !

Well, now, I don't know where to go ... Contacting Wine on it maybe ...

If someoddy got a better idea ... or any tweak ... thanks.

Philippe, Chiangmai, Thailand.

Update --

Update to my last post. I received information as my correcespondant was able to hear me. This looks good news . I was not able to hear him : problem on his Windows configuration, or on my "Wine" config .. or both ..we still don't know.

Works on local network not on the internet

I have managed to get Skype running on Gentoo using ggtux's configuration. On the local network all seems to be working fine. But when I connect to someone else on the internet the other side can't hear me but I can hear them. I have broadband and under Windows this is not a problem. Very strange. Anyone experiencing similar problems?

Well, I tried Skype Beta on a Win XP machine earlier and immediately wanted to get it on my Linux machine, but I've run into problems..

I'm running Fedora Core 1, with Wine 20040213 (one of the few that I've found to work on Fedora). The installation (SkypeSetup-Beta.exe) went fine after I set the $DISPLAY variable to ":0", where it was ":0.0" (this may have been a bad idea, I'm rather new to Linux). But I try to "Skype.exe" itself and it gives me the foloowing errors:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[sid@localhost Phone]$ wine Skype.exe
wine: Unhandled exception (thread 000f), starting debugger...
WineDbg starting on pid d
Can't find file for ELF 'wine-kthread' ((nil))
No debug information in ELF 'wine-pthread' ((nil))

--- A bunch of "No debug information in ELF" lines -----------------------------------------
--- A bunch of "No debug information in 32bit DLL" lines --------------------------------
Unhandled exception: page fault on write access to 0x00401000 in 32-bit code (0x00e82cbe).
In 32-bit mode.
0x00e82cbe (Skype.exe.EntryPoint+0x46 in Skype.exe): movl %eax,0x0(%edx)
Wine-dbg>
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have no clue what could be causing this. No windows open or anything.

If anyone has any tips, I'd appreciate it.

no incoming sound

Hi,

my problem is similar to the problem of Philippe.
Other people can hear me very clearly, but i am not able to hear anything.
I have played an mp3 with winamp2.9 and the sound is working!
I can use gnomemeeting without any problem. So i am sure, that the connection, my headset and soundhardware is working.
In my opinion there are two possible reasons why incoming sound fails:
1. there is something wrong in windows-registry file / skype configuration
2. there is something wrong in wine config file

i experienced this bug with wine version 20031212 and 20040309(installed from source) on a suse 8.2 system and ggtux's wine-config.
After staring skype from command-line there are some errors like:

fixme:file:DEVICE_Open Unknown/unsupported VxD NTICE. Try setting Windows version to 'nt40' or 'win31'.
fixme:file:DEVICE_Open Unknown/unsupported VxD Siwvid. Try setting Windows version to 'nt40' or 'win31'.
fixme:file:DEVICE_Open Unknown/unsupported VxD SICE. Try setting Windows version to 'nt40' or 'win31'.

then skype starts and works like described above.
when i start winamp there are no such errors.

Does anybody has an idea to modify the config file / registry ?

@ggtux: It would be very kind of you to mail your wine-config and win-registry, that i can compare it with my one. Perhaps you can put these files on webspace for other people, too?
Thank you very much.

Greetings

Those are probably not serious warnings. "ICE" points to the direction of Skype trying to see if any software hacking programs are in use.

Anyway, I've complete Skype success with SuSE 9.0 and wine-20040309. Anyone else?

The phone connection seems to randomly cut off, but it does the same for me anyway... I have messages like "WARNING: Trying to use ICMP (network ping) will fail unless running as root", I wonder if the lack of ICMP packets could cause a bit more of calls breaking? But I did have tens of minutes of breakless calls, and it was easy to recall if necessary.

Could someone try plain 20040309 and see if it works? While getting Steam/Counter-Strike to work I've installed dcom98 and IE6 so my configuration is not clean... and if not, try to install dcom98 and IE6 and see if works after that. Ideally I'd like to remove any dcom98/IE6 stuff and see Skype work with plain Wine. Or, in fact, ideally I'd get rid of proprietary Skype in favor of an open-source solution, but it's the only solution that has good enough NAT traversal currently. GnomeMeeting has some work to do (if it will ever work well enough with H.323...), but I need to have phone calls between Linux machine and a Windows machine...

Good news

It's possible to run Skype under Wine !!!
I currently use the Mandrake 9.2 with KDE 3.1.3, wine 20040309 and the last Skype beta version.

Everything works, except the top menu (but is it really usefull ??).

Wine 20040309 OK but still OSS sound problem

I can confirm thatn skype is "running" on RH9 / Gnome 2.2 / Wine 20040309 (except that I still have no sound)

My sound protocol is OSS. Anybody got the message below ?

--- err:wave:OSS_WaveOutInit /dev/mixer1: No such device

Do we have something to configure somewhere or are we obliged to switch on KDE using Arts, or to use Alsa ?

--> jptonnot : What kind od sound protocol are you using ?

Thanks,

Philippe

I currently use arts because it's the default protocol on Mandrake.

But see the wine config file at the section called [WinMM]. Try to change your driver.

Have fun !

My configuration : Redhat 9 + Wine 20040309 + Skype 0.97.0.6 ; I copied from my Windows XP SP1 the following libraries : crypt32.dll and msasn1.dll needed by crypt32.dll

When launching Skype :

err:module:import_dll No implementation for ADVAPI32.dll.SystemFunction041 imported from L"F:\\crypt32.dll", setting to 0xdeadbeef
err:wave:OSS_WaveOutInit /dev/mixer1: No such device
fixmele:CoCreateInstance no classfactory created for CLSID {16d8a4b1-18bf-473f-81a4-892970281b96}, hres is 0x80040150
err:msgispatchMessageA BeginPaint not called on WM_PAINT for hwnd 0x10041!
fixme:system:SystemParametersInfoW Unimplemented action: 8192 (SPI_GETFOREGROUNDLOCKTIMEOUT)
fixme:system:SystemParametersInfoW Unimplemented action: 8193 (SPI_SETFOREGROUNDLOCKTIMEOUT)
fixme:system:SystemParametersInfoW Unimplemented action: 8193 (SPI_SETFOREGROUNDLOCKTIMEOUT)

I get some WARNING: Trying to use ICMP (network ping) will fail unless running as root but I do not think that is a problem.

Like jptonnot I cannot use the menu (but is it difficult), and for now, I do not have sound working ...

Post More ...

Even when changing the "DefaultPlayback" configuration, looks like Skype is trying to open always the /dev/mixer1 device ...

And sometimes, the following happens :

fixme:nls:MultiByteToWideChar MB_USEGLYPHCHARS not supported

Check if you can record with some sound recorder program of Linux, like Audacity. If not, check your mixer settings. Menus not working is normal and they're not needed for using Skype.

Anyone got any tips to have a little less of hangups? Sometimes it works just great for me, but sometimes it doesn't take long (a minute or so) for the sound to stop reaching the other end so that he has to cancel the call and redial.

Almost OK !

OK, I have the same warning and errors that oher people here but, this is for the moment my "uggly" way to make Skype "almost usable " ;-)

1 - Using RH9 - GNOME 2.2 - OSS

err:wave:OSS_WaveOutInit /dev/mixer1: No such device

I canno't here nobody, BUT the people can hear me ! So I can speak. The voice is clear, really really clear, and I don't have ADSL here but a slow slow 56 K Internet connection, Thai style ! So I spoke with my french familly 20 minutes.

Small bug, it seems that the first call is immediatly cancel (hangup), but the second works.

2 - Switching to KDE3 - Arts
Error message "There is no recorded device .. bla bla bla..."
BUT I can hear, but canno't speak !
Really clear voice. So I listen my french familly 20 minutes ;-)

PS : Switching from 1 to 2, I have to modify the config file for the sound driver ( [ WinMM ]
).

So now, my third try will be switching on ALSA, even if a former thread is not optimistic about it. And trying it on Gnome and KDE. Of if anybody fing the way to fix one environment.

PSS: I can record and hear my voice on both , using the Sound Record. Did not try Audacity.
