Running IntelliJ

I'm an experienced Windows user but a Linux newbie. I'm trying to install an run IntelliJ. I have succesfully installed IntelliJ, but I had to do an "su" before running the installer in order to get the needed permissions to install in the default install directory, which was: /usr/local/IntelliJ

When logged on as root, I can run IntelliJ by running /usr/local/IntelliJ/bin/idea.

What I am trying to figure out is how to run IntelliJ when logged as a regular user (i.e. not root). When logged on as a regular user, I have no access to the /usr/local directories.

How do I run IntelliJ when not logged in as root?

Thanks,
Mike
