Running gnome 2.8 on Mandrake Linux 10.1

Hi. I've just installed Mandrake 10.1 Community on my laptop, and it is all running fine, except I am using KDE at the minute and would like to use GNOME. I have a copy of GNOME 2.8 on cd, but how do I install it. Everything is in source. I have tried to use the following method... (for all the packages on the CD and I am following the correct order).

tar xjf packagename
./configure
make
make install

but I get to 'make' and it just comes up with error messages. Why?

Also, once I have done all of this, how do I switch GNOME on to stop using KDE?

Please help me as I am all rather new to this and am just picking things up as I go along!

Thanks. Matt

Do you have the development packages installed?

Since you're using Mandrake, you sure it's not in RPM format? In that case, you will have to use the rpm command, not make.

Sorry, but all these answers are wrong! The prob most likely is that theres a specific order you need to compile the packages in, else you'l end up in all kinds of dependancy errors which is probably what your running into. Look for the list of what the order is, im almost sure its on the net somewhere, i have it in a magazine. Goof luck to you though, the whole process is a pain in the ass.
