Running Gnome

I recently installed Redhat 7.2. When I booted up the system, a text prompt asked me for my username/password. I logged in (as root) and nothing happened (probably usual?). My questiopn is: How do I start the Gnome?

Depending on whether or not you want to boot straight into a login GUI and choose Gnome, KDE or other window manager, you'd want to edit your /etc/inittab and change the default runlevel to 5 from 3. If not, you can type startx or if you still want a chooser type login type kdm or gdm, KDE or Gnome specific respectively.

I've tried what you said but nothing works. Except that is for edition /etc/inittab. I don't even how to edit it.

The incredibly parculiar thing aboutit is, I've had it installed perfectly before and it automatically loads the gnome or kde thing.

I've tried to install almost all of the major distributions and this was the only one I got to work. Video card problems, just apusing and more...

Xwindow probs

Okay, The question you should be asking is "How is the Xserver configured on the command line?" Im sorry but I dont know that answere for RH7.2 . And to manually config a file thats a different bowl of soup. I use the VI editor but from what I hear from alot of others emacs is their choice. Check out this link
There you will find some good documentations good luck.

You can try pico as the editor, or even better I think is jed. BUt for this purpose, go to the /etc directory and type pico inittab, the file will open and you can scroll down, change the 3 to a 5 and follow the options at the bottom to save and exit, such as; ^X means Crtrl+X to exit etc...Try that and see if it goes into the login chooser at startup.
