run xine in multiple instances?

Hi all,
up to a certain version that I don't remember exactly (around Fedora 6 or 7, or in other terms: half a year ago) it was no problem to open multiple instances of xine and run them simultaneously. But in recent versions if you open a 2nd instance its video output shows some nice screen saver like lines but no images.
Of course I admit that this feature is not really necessary, but for some purposes it was useful, f.ex. compare quality of 2 recordings etc.

Any ideas of how to get this working again?
Thanks in advance.

Btw, as far as I have tried, this applies to MPlayer also. So I guess it is not the GUI but some underlaying library?
