Run application from terminal with &


I have a question of runing application from terminal, say, I run emacs

$emacs &

the problem is that when I close this terminal, emacs termnated either.

Does '&' mean it allow the application to continue to run after the terminal
is closed?

platform: FC4+Gnome

no, it doesn't mean that at all. you want "nohup"
