rt2870 wireless dongle firmware not working properly debian squeeze linksys wusb500n

I have a wireless dongle that runs off the rt2870sta module from the firmware-ralink package. I installed wireless tools, kernel headers, and the firmware, loaded rt2870sta with modprobe rt2870sta which showed successful loading, and in ifconfig and iwconfig there is nothing. When I reboot still nothing. What is the problem?
