Rsync error message

I use rsync to transfer files back and forth from my local system to my remote account at school, and the alias I have set up normally works fine. However, I got back this semester, and ran the command as normal, and I get the following error among the rest of the output:

Code:
TERM: Undefined variable.
Everything seems to get transfered fine, but I'm curious why that message is coming up. Any idea what it's referring to?

Back in time, most command line applications were refering to the $TERM variable to know what kind of "terminal" you where using. Today, no one use terminal, but the behavior have been kept, so this application try to find what kind of terminal you use but can't find out. It usually doesn't matter much, but it can sometime stop the color to work or that kind of neat display.
To fix it, just type something like "TERM=vt100" (it's a well know terminal) or "TERM=linux"

But why would that message never have appeared until now? Also, is TERM not defined on the local computer, or the remote one?

It has to be defined on the client. No clue why it happens now, maybe the sysadmin of your school updated their rsync utility version recently?

Actually, I just checked, and "echo $TERM" gives me a valid value (xterm and vt100) on both the local and remote system, although I still get the warning. Are you sure that's what it's referring to?
