I downloaded the OOffice2.1.0 tarball, unpacked it to an rpm folder and ran
rpm -Uvih *rpm
as described in the installation instructions. Halfway thru the install, I ran out of disk space. I cleared up space, ran the same command again and it told me several packages were already installed, then stopped (sorry, lost error msgs.) I then ran
rpm -Uvih --force *rpm
but when I ran ooffice, I got an error at the initial splash screen. At this point, I decided to uninstall ooffice using rpm -e, and start again. However, rpm told me:
error: package openoffice.org-base-2.1.0-6.i586.rpm is not installed
for each package. Hmm. I then used yum to
yum remove openoffice.org
This removed version openoffice 1.1. I then went to the OOffice2.1 rpm folder and ran
>>yum localinstall *.rpm

Following this delightful collection of messages, I decided that it would be best to leave the room and vent anger for a few moments, and upon my return, I posted this message.
all the required files were extracted and icons were also placed in the start menu. It seems that the installation may have been already complete, but I couldn't find where the installation had put them. So that's it fixed. If, however, some kind soul feels like enlightening me as to why rpm gave me the contradictory error messages similar to those below for each package:
>>rpm -e *.rpm
error: package openoffice.org-base-2.1.0-6.i586.rpm is not installed
>>rpm -Uvh *.rpm
package openoffice.org-base-2.1.0-6 is already installed
When you install a package you refer to it using its name only (in your case its openoffice.org-base). The version number and rpm extension are not part of the package name once the package is installed and registered in the rpm database. You can use the version number with "rpm -e", but including the *.rpm extension will result in errors similar to the one you got.
You could have checked which openoffice related packages were installed by using the query option in rpm e.g.
Code:
$rpm -qa | grep -i openoffice
If nothing is returned, no packages matching the query were found. If a match to the query is found, the packages and their versions numbers will be listed.
